CFP: Education, aspiration and socialization. Examining school effects on social mobility and health

American Anthropological Association Meetings
New Orleans, November 17-21 2010
Organizers: Jed Stevenson, Department of Anthropology, Emory University; Peggy Froerer, Department of Anthropology, Brunel University

This panel seeks to take stock of the contributions of anthropology to understanding the impact of school education on processes of socialization and on children’s aspirations in relation to broader processes of social mobility and improved health. It will serve as a forum for a comparative discussion of contemporary ethnographic research on schooling and its effects in diverse, cross-cultural contexts – both through school-based studies that document how formal educational institutions socialize children in relation to future forms of social mobility and health practices, and through population-based studies that elucidate contributions of school experience to later life opportunities and activities.

Abstracts of no more than 250 words should be sent to Jed Stevenson (egsteve@emory.edu) or Peggy Froerer (peggy.froerer@brunel.ac.uk) by March 25 for consideration.

CFP: Towards an Anthropology of Childhood and Children

International Conference
Towards an Anthropology of Childhood and Children: Ethnographic Fieldwork Diversity and Construction of a Field
March 9-11, 2011 - University of Liege (Belgium)
Coordinated by Élodie Razy, Charles-Édouard de Suremain, Véronique Pache
For decades, childhood and children were considered as a ‘small subject’ (Lallemand & Le Moal 1981). It is thus justified to wonder: ‘where have all the babies gone?’ (Gottlieb 2000) or: ‘why don’t anthropologists like children?’ (Hirschfeld 2003). Whereas interdisciplinary research centres and networks, Cultural Studies, courses, projects, and meetings on the theme multiply, we propose a critical overview of anthropological accounts on childhood and children. The conference will present how this field developed in social and human sciences according to different academic traditions.

CFP: International Conference 'The doors of perception: Viewing anthropology through the eyes of children'

30 September & 1 October 2010 - VU University Amsterdam

This conference aims to bring together anthropologists who work with children as well as researchers from other disciplines to provide a platform for intellectual discussion, exchange of ideas, networking, and to offer opportunities for collaboration. The primary goal of the conference is to examine current developments in the study of children and to develop perspectives on how research with children can contribute to anthropological epistemology and theory. Central questions to such a reflection are:
1) What can child-oriented research offer to current epistemological debates and theory in anthropology?
2) How can anthropological research with children benefit from insights from other disciplines?
3) How can an anthropological, child-oriented approach contribute to the research of children in other disciplines?
The conference welcomes proposals not merely from anthropologists but also from scholars representing other disciplines (including but not limited to geography, psychology, sociology, history, and education). We invite such scholars to reflect on the possible cross-fertilization that does or can take place in these interdisciplinary encounters.

Internet: alunos plagiam cada vez mais para trabalhos escolares

As crianças e jovens recorrem cada vez mais à Internet para fazerem os trabalhos escolares. No entanto, o objetivo é sobretudo plagiar, não fazer pesquisas, alerta a investigadora Cristina Ponte, coordenadora do EU Kids Online Portugal. “As crianças vão à Internet fazer pesquisa para o trabalho escolar e muitas vezes essa pesquisa é um plágio”, disse a investigadora, a propósito do Dia Europeu da Internet Segura, que se assinala amanhã.

CFP: Changing Families in a Changing World

CRFR 3rd International Conference
University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, UK
16th-18th June 2010
We live in times of enormous change on personal and global levels. Families are more diverse and more likely to change, with divorce, separation, stepfamilies, international adoption, increased life expectancy in some parts of the world and decreased in others, and a growing divide between rich and poor at local and global levels all becoming more prevalent. What happens to families in this changing word? How do they deal with the way in which global changes impact upon their lives? What do we know about these changes and how they play out in and across different parts of the globe?

Mothering: Anthropological Perspectives

Chamada para Artigos
This anthology will explore the topic and experiences of mothering from a cross-cultural perspective. Although the collection will primarily focus on cultural anthropological work, we welcome submissions from all four fields in anthropology (linguistic, physical/biological, archeology, and cultural). We encourage writings of recent fieldwork, welcoming the representations of local and global perspectives, and writings that represent all points of the insider-outsider spectrum, including auto-ethnography. Writing styles may vary from field notes to ethnographic fiction to traditional academic writing to poetry to photographic representations. While ethnographic (research-based) submissions will make up the majority of the volume, theoretical submissions are also welcome. Ler mais...
