EU Youth Report 2012

EU Youth Report

The EU Youth Report 2012 summarises the results of the first work cycle of the EU Youth Strategy (2010-2012) and proposes priorities for the next three years. It presents new and revealing statistics on how the situation of young people in the European Union has been affected by the financial crisis.

According to the EU Youth Report, nearly all Member States report that the EU Youth Strategy has reinforced existing priorities at national level since it was launched in January 2010. This includes focusing on education, employment and entrepreneurship opportunities for young people, promoting social inclusion and health and providing young people with opportunities to take active part in society. The EU Youth Report proposes new priorities for the coming three years. The report highlights that youth employment will remain high on the EU agenda. For the coming years, the Strategy should focus more on the consequences of the current crisis on young people. This means more emphasis on social inclusion and health & well-being.

All Member States have submitted national reports which feed into both the Communication and the SWDs. Young people have been consulted in drawing up these reports, and different ministries have contributed. All national reports are posted here.

Este Estado social não é para jovens

Hugo Mendes (CESNOVA – FCSH/UNL)

Building Capacity for Ethical Research with Children & Young People (report)

The project has drawn on and enriched the existing knowledge base about ethical research within the Childwatch Network, and capitalised on the information shared at the Child Participatory Research Roundtable at the 2009 Childrens Rights at a Crossroads Conference in Addis Ababa. It has provided useful information about the ethical issues and challenges facing researchers undertaking research with children.
Existing resources and publications that provide guidelines to researchers have been identified and collated. The information can be used to expand the discussion on appropriate Child Research Methodologies, interface with the work of the Childwatch Training Courses for Young Researchers to build research capacity.

Adolescent Ambassadors

Workshop at the GHI

Adolescent Ambassadors
20th Century Youth Organizations and International Relations

This workshop seeks to add to the burgeoning historiography on non-state actors in international relations by focusing on youth and youth organizations. Parallel to the proliferation of inter- and transnational organizations around the turn of the century, Western scientists invented the concept of adolescence to demarcate an intermediate period between childhood and adulthood. The contention that adolescence was an unstable life phase, a developmental stage marked by extreme vitality and insecurity, persuaded policymakers across borders to establish domestic institutions designed to shape, educate, and improve an allegedly erratic youth. But...

Youth, Inequalities and the Future of Rio de Janeiro

INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR
"YOUTH, INEQUALITIES AND THE FUTURE OF RIO DE JANEIRO"
Rio de Janeiro, June 6-8, 2011
Rio de Janeiro is known for its beauty, for the warmth of its people, for carnival and samba. But it is also known for its social and economic inequalities, its social and political problems, most especially poverty and social violence. After decades of economic decadence (the reasons of which are quite consensual in the literature), sheer social and political problems have accumulated, shortening the horizon of expectations of its inhabitants, increasing the chance that companies and individuals choose to leave the city, reducing the will to participate in the political process, feeding violence and a problematic sociability. The idea of a "problematic sociability", of course, has much to do with how young people live and relate to other social categories as they constantly test the boundaries of that very sociability while negotiating or affirming their social and political identities. Youth has always been at the center of concerns about what to do in a social environment characterized by strong inequalities of opportunities, possibilities and results.

Children and Young People's Participation in Planning and Regeneration

Day, L., Sutton, L. and Jenkins, S. (2011) Children and Young People's Participation in Planning and Regeneration: A final report to the Ecorys Research Programme 2010-11. UK: Ecorys.

This report presents the findings from a research study carried out by Ecorys in partnership with Loughborough University, to examine the evidence for children and young people’s participation in planning and regeneration.

The main purpose of this report is to present the detailed findings from the research study. Our intention was to draw together into one place the very diverse range of academic and non-academic studies that have been undertaken in this field, and to reflect upon the lessons for policy and practice at the current point in time; when children and young people's participation is framed by challenging economic circumstances in the UK and internationally. Whilst the report has a particular focus on the UK situation, it also draws upon research literature and practice examples from Europe, South America, North America and Australasia to provide a comparison. The findings are set within the over-arching context of the 1989 UN Convention of the Rights of the Child (CRC).
